Recent events in Greece caused by the black economy

The recent events in Greece caused by the black economy reminded me of an adventurous trip there in the 80`s with my sister.
We had caught the magic bus with our tent ,cooking utensils, sleeping bags and a few hundred pounds . We were  intending to go Greek  island hopping.
One night all the beach tents were robbed .We awoke to find all our money had gone.
Angry scenes of mutual recrimination followed as we armed ourselves with our respective cooking utensils.
Eventually  all anger spent , we set off folornly to find help.
Help soon materialised in the guise of a friendly young handsome  Greek  chap called Spiros. Before long we found ourselves guests of honour being wined ,dined and taken for boating excursions on his small yacht.
Definitely the best part of the holiday to date we agreed.
The villa where we were staying was filled with whisky and cigarrettes. Spiros explained that he was a smuggler and even the local police were in on it.
After a fun filled week  and now with  some money in our pockets we bade farewell to Spiros , but not before filling our rucksacks with bottles of whisky to present as gifts to our family.
All this naughtiness was very exciting to two young girls just out of convent school!
Eventually we arrived home having missed the first week of  our University term.  It was definitely a memorable holiday
Recent events have shown how a  thriving black economy can wreak damage on a country`s economy; but it is easy to see why it  could be  an attractive pastime!

I
agree with the concerns expressed by Marie Alwyn who has suffered ill-health as a result of dangerous mercury, which is a potent pollutant and highly toxic to humans.  Mercury is present in the laughably termed eco-friendly cfl light bulbs. These supposedly low-energy bulbs were the idea of entrepreneurs who  alleged would ameliorate global warming.  There is not a shred of scientific evidence for this theory and these low-energy bulbs hardly save a penny on the electricity bill, a recent study indicated.  Sadly, a lot of well-meaning politicians are not qualified scientists, and yet they have the worrying power to legislate their ideas. All this lunacy is now enshrined in law.  These mercury-containing light bulbs were mass produced following the EU legislation and free light bulbs were even handed out to local schoolchildren in Oxford.  This was very irresponsible as the children could have broken them, releasing a toxic substance known to harm children’s developing brains. I hope that headteachers will take a more responsible stance in future.  My daughter was given one by her geography teacher at Cheney School. Our incandescent light bulbs have now been phased out, yet they contained no toxic material, give a better reading light and do not trigger migraines or epilepsy in susceptible people.  I do vote Green as a person who is a passionate environmentalist but feel these mercury bulbs are a n environmental error..  SUSAN THOMAS  Oxford  Read these Letters stories      * Historic street is still a cobbled-up messLetters RSS Feed  Not a very bright idea  10:00am Thursday 22nd September 2011      * Print     * Email     * Comments

LIBERAL PARTY THE PEACEMAKERS

In 1901 the young Liberal politician David Lloyd George bravely called an anti war meeting.
He stood up alone against a braying mob to denounce an unfair war being waged against the Boers.
He always disliked the trampling underfoot of the underdog.
But the crowd, alive with jingoistic fervour were having none of it.   They felt that he was being unpatriotic and a riot ensued. He escaped in the nick of time in disguise.
War is never the way.  Peace is the true path to prosperity. The wealthy and neutral Switzerland   so aptly demonstrates this fact.
Before the war on Iraq every single Lib Dem M.P. voted against the invasion while many Labour and Tory M.P.`s voted in favour.
Now Iraq is contaminated with depleted uranium giving rise to birth defects, and many lives have been lost on both sides; a terrible legacy.
