Politicians are milking anthropogenic climate change for all its worth. It provides an ideal excuse for their incompetence regarding the recent floods, as was reported in your letters page. University academics are also profiting  as their previously impoverished departments avail themselves of Government funding and ESRC grants to study "Climate Change"; thus bolstering the consensus. One academic, Professor Hal Lewis, resigned because of the scientific shortcomings behind global warming studies in his department The main drivers of climate are the following: 1. Orbital variations and tilts in  Earth`s axis known as the Milankovitch Cycles. These periodically bring on lengthy ice ages. 2. The Coriolis Effect  which causes  vigorous wind patterns that result in typhoons etc 3.Solar radiation and solar sunspot cycles have a huge effect on our climate. Regarding the last point, several solar physicists and NASA scientists believe that Earth is heading for a mini ice age as occurred during the last  Solar Maunder Minimum in 1645. The data shows that the sun is heading for a cooling phase and less measured solar radiation is  already reaching our crops which may cause them to be less productive. The recent extreme Winters are also indicative that the solar physicists are correct. My money is on the NASA  solar physicists as opposed to the scaremongering  and manipulative politicians. We therefore should focus on getting as many homes insulated at the very least. If NASA is correct, then our politicians have made a catastrophic error in closing coal power stations.
