Sir
the skies of England were once filled with smogs from countless open coal or wood  fires and chimneys belched out noxious smoke.
Not surprisingly respiratory disease was rife and tb was very common a century ago up until the 1950`s.
The killer smog of London in 1952 caused by these countless open fires finally gave rise to the Clean Air Act of 1956.
Another Clean Air Act was introduced in 1993.
However these  vital protections to our health are now being reversed by Labour`s climate legislation.
DEFRA has called for rules to be relaxed as the Clean Air Act now conflicts with low carbon energy policy.
This new policy means that it is now encouraged to burn wood in fireplaces as it is now low carbon.
In fact wood is not at all low carbon and burning wood will cause serious damage to the  health of  all local residents.
Neither is it acceptable to burn coal in the fireplace for the same reason .
Didcot Power Station had undergone substantial technical improvements to its chimney stacks.
This meant that  Didcot residents`respiratory health was protected in accordance with the now defunct Clean Air Act.
It is alleged by Derrick Holt that I am in favour of fossil fuels.
This is not the case.
I am in favour of protecting the health of our citizens and keeping the lights on.
This means that our coal power stations need to be kept functioning for the time being.
Since Didcot closed I have endured 8 power cuts at home, one occurred last night form 6pm to 10pm.

I AGREE with Susan Thomas that CO2 is a harmless, non-toxic gas. It is found naturally in our atmosphere.

However, in 2007 in the USA, CO2 was ruled to be a pollutant and in 2010 the US Department of the Environment began to regulate CO2, based on the premise that CO2 was a so-called greenhouse gas and the ever-increasing CO2 in the atmosphere presented a public health problem.

The planet absorbs solar radiation during the day and gives off infrared radiation at night. CO2 and H2O vapour absorb this infrared radiation and so help to maintain the earth’s average surface temperature at a warmer level than it would be without this greenhouse effect.

It is not this greenhouse effect that is so much the problem. It is the ever-increasing accumulation of CO2 and other greenhouse gases from the burning of coal and other sources which are cumulatively causing the increases in the earth’s average surface temperature. Hence the phenomenon of global warming.
