The thing is that in the Victorian Edwardian era coal was indeed
very dirty and homes belched out filthy smoke that cost lives. Then in
1952 along came the clean air act and this made life cleaner and safer
for city dwellers. In line with the Clean air Act the coal power
stations were upgraded so that their emissions were mainly steam and no
dirty particulates or black smoke was allowed to be emitted. This
safeguarded the health of citizens. Therefore modern coal power stations
are not dangerous to health although burning coal in your fireplace
still is dangerous since domestic chimneys do not have scrubbers.
Therefore
campaigns against coal power stations are misguided and may lead to
worse air pollution as homeowners burn coal and wood in their fireplaces
to keep warm.
